The South Australian Hand Surgery Society Annual Meeting is going to be held in person on Friday 21st November 2025 at Mount Lofty House.
Our Invited Speakers for 2025 will be Dr Will Alexander (Hand, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery - Adult and Paediatric) from Melbourne and Dr Brett McClelland (Hand and Wrist Surgery) from Newcastle.
The meeting is the only forum in South Australia for those interested in surgery of the hand and the upper limb. It includes Hand Surgeons, Orthopaedic Surgeons, Plastic Surgeons, Occupational and rehabilitation Physicians, Occupational Therapist, Physiotherapist, Nurses, Surgical Trainees and others with an interest in the upper limb and the hand.
Call for Abstracts - Anyone interested in presenting at the meeting should email an abstract ASAP to Dr Oscar Brumby-Rendell and Dr Nick Smith - oscar.br@me.com and nws.smith@gmail.com. Alternatively if you feel that any colleague or trainee may wish to present please give them this link and encourage them to contact Oscar or Nick ASAP. Applicants will be notified if their presentation is accepted.

The AGM will follow the meeting and start at 5:30 PM, followed by dinner at 6:30 PM (Martha’s Restaurant).

Dr Will Alexander, Melbourne

Hand, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (Adult and Paediatric)
Dr Will Alexander obtained his medical degree from the University of Adelaide, and went on to specialise in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. He trained in the major tertiary centres in Victoria, including The Alfred, Peter MacCallum, Royal Melbourne, Royal Children’s, and St Vincent’s hospitals.
He undertook further microsurgery training in Coimbatore, India; then visited various international surgeons to further hone his skills, including in Paris and Kuala Lumpur. He volunteered his time in both Sri Lanka and Vietnam; and has worked in Darwin Hospital to help fill Plastic Surgical consultant staff shortages.
Will completed his Hand and Microsurgery fellowship at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne, and more recently was awarded the prestigious American Society for Surgery of the Hand's (ASSH) International fellows' travelling fellowship, where he visited five prestigious Hand and Plastic Surgery centres across America. He was the winner of the 2024 Epworth Hospital's Travelling Doctor's Grant.
He holds public appointments as a Consultant Surgeon at The Royal Children’s Hospital, St Vincent’s Hospital, and Monash Children's Hospital. He is a member of the Victorian Hand Surgery Associates (VHSA), and consults in the Fitzroy rooms. He is a regular visiting surgeon at St Vincent’s Private Hospital Kew, as well as Epworth Freemasons Albert St.
Will has sub-specialised in adult and paediatric hand surgery, including nerve and micro-surgery. He maintains a keen interest in other aspects of Plastic and Reconstructive surgery, in particular skin surgery (cancer management, reconstructive).
He has presented and published his research extensively on the national and international surgical forum, on a broad range of topics including nerve, trauma, burns, and cancer surgery. Most recently, he was an invited speaker at the 2023 combined hand surgery conference for American and Australian Hand Surgery societies, discussing advances in upper limb surgery in the setting of spasticity and cerebral palsy. He teaches junior doctors and surgeons regularly and has moderated numerous educational sessions for the Aus/NZ hand surgery fellows, on various topics.
He is an accredited Fellow of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons, a member of the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons, and a member of the Indigenous Health Committee at RACS.
Dr Brett McClelland, Newcastle
BMed, FRACS (Orth)
Hand and Wrist Surgery
Dr Brett McClelland is a fully qualified, Australian trained Orthopaedic Surgeon who specialises in Hand, wrist, peripheral nerve and Microsurgery. He manages every condition of the hand and wrist in both adult and paediatric patients.
After studying Medical Science at Sydney University, Dr McClelland undertook his medical schooling at The University of Newcastle. He also completed his Orthopaedic Surgical Specialty Training in Newcastle. He has worked in many Hospitals throughout New South Wales and South Australia. After completing his training, Dr McClelland undertook two sub-specialised Hand and Microsurgical Fellowships; firstly in Tampere, Finland, then in Toronto, Canada.
Dr McClelland received The Transplantation Society’s Young Investigator Grant for his work on Hand Transplantation in 2013. He has presented this and other research at Local, National and International meetings in Australia, North America and Europe.
Dr McClelland has an interest in peripheral nerve surgery including carpal and cubital tunnel syndromes and the brachial plexus, Dupuytrens Disease, arthritis around the hand and wrist (both osteo and rheumatoid), as well as hand trauma and reconstructive microsurgery.
Dr McClelland is a Fellow of the Australian Orthopaedic Association, as well as holding memberships with the Australian Medical Association, American Society for Surgery of the Hand, The Transplantation Society, and the International Hand and Composite Tissue Allotransplantation Society.

Ordinary Members – medical practitioners with an interest in hand surgery and hold a surgical fellowship or equivalent qualification $100
Associate (Non voting) – medical practitioners, surgical trainees, hand therapists and allied professionals who have a medical degree or allied health qualification but not a surgical fellowship $30
